The United States has always been the most popular destination for ambitious international students who have strong desire to pursue their education abroad because of its international reputation on the quality higher education system, cultural diversity, relatively open labour market, and future career opportunities. Statistics show the US universities were hosting approximately 1.1 million of the 4.6 million international students enrolled in 2017.

Diversity is the special charm of the USA. In the U.S., every state is unique in its culture, climates, history, economy and more.  Studying in the US allows international students to fully explore its culture in different perspectives, respect cultural differences and learn how to be a global citizen. Graphically speaking, one-third of international students choose to study in California, New York or Texas.

Engineering; Business Management; Math & Computer Science are the top 3 areas of study for international students, accounting more than half of all international enrolment at U.S. higher education institutions due to future career opportunities. Statistically, 48% of international students were in STEM fields and were eligible for the extended 36-month OPT upon graduation.

Why study in America?

Improve your overall English skills
There is no better way to learn English than immersing yourself in an English-speaking environment. Using English on a daily basis can help you speak and understand the language much better. English is now the global language for business and communication, so if you are planning to improve your overall English skills, the United States is a good place to go!

Extend your global network
In the US, networking is a significant part of everyday life and it is the way that a large number of people in the US find the right connections and lead them to a future career path. Studying abroad is a perfect opportunity to meet people with diverse background, interests, culture, and abilities. Being active and always having an awareness of improving your global network may bring you new opportunities for future development.

Live a new life
If you want to get out of your comfort zone, see your potential and be more independent, studying in the US can help you achieve all of these. There are a lot of exciting activities and events going on in the States, and you can always be a part of it! The university experience in the United States is quite different than it is in other countries, and you will certainly gain a lot out of it!

Gain global insights and career opportunities
Students who are holding the F-1 Visa are authorized for up to 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation and become eligible for another year of OPT when seeking a further postsecondary degree at a higher level. Moreover, students with a qualifying science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) degree are eligible for an OPT extension of up to 24 additional months. Gaining an overseas relevant working experience is beneficial for future career development regardless of staying in the United States or returning to the home country.

Language

Contrary to the popular belief of most Americans, there is no ‘official’ language of the country. Statistically speaking, more than 90% of the population speaks at least a fluent English. However, most classes that international students take will be taught in English. That’s the reason why international students are required to take TOEFL, IELTS or other English proficiency tests before they are accepted to an educational institution in the U.S.

Different from the British English, the United States has its own type of English, frequently named ‘American English’ which varies across different regions in the States.

Currency & the costs of living

Both the tuition and living costs vary considerably between different universities, levels of education and cities.

Generally, the tuition fee is usually between 5000 USD and 50000 USD per year. Costs for food and living are normally between 8000 USD and 12000USD per year. In addition to tuition fees, costs of food and living (basically accommodation), fees including transportation, course content, and personal expenses should also be taken into consideration.
